Hi, I'm Vegard

Ph.D. in statistical physics

I am interested in anything that can be modeled with tools from statistical physics. Especially non-equilibrium systems; everything from molecular machines to foreign exchange markets. My main focus has been studying how the possession of information and feedback control affects the efficiency of thermodynamic machines, and how to optimize their operation. My work is based on both analytical and numerical work, and I have been a passionate teacher for 5 years.

My background in statistical physics and information theory has led me into machine learning and artificial intelligence, both of which heavily borrows ideas from the aforementioned fields. Due to that passion, I have studied computer science (algorithm and data structures) by myself and I stay up to date by reading the latest AI papers.

Key qualifications

Mathematical modeling

Physics and mathematics are intrinsically connected. I have advanced knowledge of calculus, differential equations, linear algebra, statistics, and probability theory, and know how to apply maths to solve complex problems.

Programming

Many problems in physics do not have analytical solutions. When maths fail, computers step up. I started programming 9 years ago, and I'm experienced in data structures and algorithms.

Communication

I have been a passionate teacher for 5 years, and have worked hard in making complicated subjects easy to understand. During my Ph.D. I have also held numerous presentations, both at conferences as well as locally at the university.

Technologies

I love learning new ways to solve difficult problems. I first learned programming using C++ and Matlab, but now I mainly use Python and the following tools: NumPy, Pandas, Scikit, Matplotlib, LaTeX, Keras, Tensorflow, and Jupyter.
